WordPress for Android Reviews

WordPress for Android
WordPress for Android started out as independent creation wpToGo, before WordPress decided it liked it so much it bought it up - hiring the maker to develop it in-house. It's very feature-packed, with the latest version offering full integration with other apps, letting you spin content and send it directly to the app for easy updating. It could do with more image insertion tools, though.

4. UK Jobs
Hey, times are hard and you've got to pay for your oppressive monthly mobile phone contract somehow. Offering a fully searchable database of current UK job vacancies, UK Jobs, which pulls in its data from independent employment site 1job.co.uk is, a slightly cumbersome but useful and non-governmental tool.

5. Hotmail
Microsoft has teamed up with developer SEVEN to offer an official Hotmail app for Android, which gives users a simple, clean interface, push notification support and even lets you manage multiple Hotmail accounts from within the app. If your email needs haven't yet been assimilated by Google, it's a useful option.

6. Google Sky Map
A stunning app that renders Patrick Moore obsolete, by using your phone's orientation tools to give you an accurate representation of the stars and planets on your screen. Point your phone at the sky, then learn what constellations are visible and if that's a UFO or just Venus. Google Sky Map even works indoors, if you're not keen on getting cold.

7. Layar
The stunning augmented reality app Layar has recently gone commercial, adding an online shop that allows users to buy AR content such as travel guides, local house price apps and much more. But you're still able to use the numerous free Layers to pop data up over real-world locations, delivering a satisfying futuristic experience.

Top free apps for your Android phone
OK, so the Android Market is more akin to Lidl or Asda than the iPhone's enormous, indulgent Selfridges-at-Christmas time approach, but the open source nature of Google's OS means there are plenty of apps for Android to be found.
Most of the good stuff on Android is free, thanks to the work of developers who do it for love alone. So here's our pick of the top free Android apps you should install.
And you can find more great apps at Top 150 best Android apps. Also why not check out our video of the top 10 free Android games?

1. Seesmic
There are many Twitter apps on Android - and Twitter itself shook up the scene with the launch of its own-brand app recently - but we're sticking with Seesmic. Offering support for multiple accounts, a home page widget showing latest tweets and an incredibly slick and professional design, it's one of the finest examples of app development out there today.

2. Facebook for Android
Facebook for Android is lacking in features compared to Facebook itself, but a recent update added Inbox support to the Android app, finally allowing its users to communicate in almost real time. The app's fast and stable, with a simplicity that reminds you of the old days when using Facebook used to be bearable.

3. ASTRO File Manager
ASTRO is nothing more than a Windows-style file explorer, but if you're into tinkering and directly installing Android APK files yourself, it's essential to stick something like this on your phone. It makes your phone feel like a computer, and makes you feel like you're in charge of it.
UPDATE: ASTRO still exists as a free ad-supported app, but you'll have to pay for the full version without ads. Our new favourite file explorer app is listed below.

Nokia Lumia 710 Reviews | Nokia Lumia 710 Detail

The first of Nokia's new generation of smartphones isn't flashy and certainly isn't an iPhone killer. But it's a nice device, and at Rs 15,500 it's a bargain.

Nokia and Microsoft, erstwhile big players in the mobile market, have joined forces to get back in the game.

A little more than a year ago, Microsoft launched a new mobile operating system called Windows Phone 7 to replace its aging Windows Mobile software. Then last February, the world's largest phone manufacturer announced that it would abandon Symbian, its longtime smartphone-operating system, and adopt Windows Phone 7 in its place.

Windows Phone 7 devices have drawn little interest from consumers to date, but Microsoft hopes Nokia can help change that. The first Nokia Windows Phone 7 devices started hitting store shelves around the globe last fall and hit American shores earlier this month when T-Mobile began selling the Lumia 710.

I got an early glimpse at the Lumia 710 in October and wasn't impressed. But after getting to play with it over the past several weeks, I've warmed up to it. It's an easy-to-use, quick and light smartphone.

The first thing you'll notice about the Lumia 710 is that, in an age of jumbo-sized screens and elegant designs, it's a modest device. It's about the same size and shape as Apple's 2-year-old iPhone 3GS, with a similarly curved back and a plastic case.

I'm a big fan of phones of this size. They're easy to fit in a pocket or hold in your hand. While the Lumia 710's plastic case feels a bit cheap, it makes the device lighter.

At first glance, the Lumia's 710 technical specs don't match up well with the latest and greatest phones from Apple or Google's Android partners. It only has a single-core processor, with 512 megabytes of memory, just 8 gigabytes of storage and no memory card slot that would allow users to supplement its storage. By comparison, the latest Android smartphones have dual and even quad-core processors and the iPhone 4S has as much as 64-gigabytes of storage.

But this nominal difference means much less in practice. The Lumia 710 is fast and responsive. In my informal tests, it seemed to launch and switch between apps more quickly than many of the dual-core Android devices I've used. It also has stamina — I typically could use it a full day without it needing an extra charge.

The storage capacity limits the amount of music, movies, documents and apps you can keep on the device. But this limitation is mitigated by the additional 25 gigabytes of storage Microsoft offers Windows Phone 7 users on its servers in the cloud. Users can automatically store Office documents on the so-called SkyDrive and have their pictures and videos automatically uploaded to it.

One of the stronger points of the Lumia 710 is the Windows Phone 7 software. Compared with Android, Windows Phone 7 is generally a much more visually appealing and intuitive operating system. While I hesitate to recommend Android devices to those new to smartphones because of the operating system's complexity, I don't have the same reservations about Windows Phone 7. One exceptional feature of the software is its built-in Bing search application, which allows users to scan bar codes, identify music, find local events and search the Web and local business at the same time.

Unfortunately, other than Windows Phone 7, there's nothing terribly exciting about the Lumia 710. It doesn't have a front-facing camera or a speech-recognition system as sophisticated as the iPhone's Siri. It does have a rear-facing camera, but it's slow, does a poor job in low light and has a 5-megapixel resolution that is pedestrian and grainy by today's standards.

While I generally liked the Lumia's 710 physical design, I didn't like its buttons. I often had to press its power button several times to wake it up. Conversely, its camera button seemed overly sensitive; I frequently found myself in the camera app without wanting to be there.

But the biggest shortcoming of the Lumia 710 is, ironically enough, the same thing that is best about it — Windows Phone 7. While the software is easier and more fun to use than Android, it's lacking in apps and some capabilities.

Microsoft says there are now 50,000 apps available for Windows Phone 7, and you can find many of the most popular mobile programs for it. But you'll find 10 times as many apps for the iPhone and eight times as many for Android devices. Among the applications you can't get for Windows Phone 7 are Pandora, Instagram, the game "Infinity Blade" and, amazingly enough, Skype, which is also owned by Microsoft. But then again, looks like Microsoft has bigger plans of Skype with Windows Phone 8 Apollo.

Beyond the app gap, Windows Phone 7 also comes up short on Web browsing. A growing number of websites now use HTML5, the latest version of the code used to design Web pages and applications. Unfortunately, Windows Phone 7's Internet Explorer browser does a poor job of supporting HTML5 compared to the browsers in the iPhone and Android devices.

As a result, some buttons and pages won't work right, some videos won't play and some mobile-oriented sites won't load at all. The problems don't affect all sites but are frustrating when you encounter them.

Despite such issues, the Lumia 710 is well worth considering. It's not a standout device, but it's not a bad one — and its price is just right.

Nokia Unveils Its New Windows Phone | Nokia Lumia window phone

Today Nokia announced the first two of its new line of Windows Phone smartphones. At the Nokia World conference in London, the Finnish phone manufacturer announced the upcoming release of the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Lumia 710.

The Lumia 800 is Nokia’s new flagship smartphone and will feature a 3.7″ 800×480 touchscreen, an 8 megapixel camera, 9.5 hour battery time (for phone calls), 7 hours of video playback, WiFi support, bluetooth, micro USB, 16GB of user memory, 512 MB of RAM, 2 microphones, 3D accelerometer, and an ambient light sensor. It will run Windows Phone 7.5 Mango and feature several proprietary apps, such as Nokia Music, Microsoft Lync, Bing Maps, and personal information manager software for contacts, calendars and more.
The Lumia 710 will have the same size screen but a more rounded shape to the case. It will also have lower specifications, such as a 5 megapixel camera and 8GB of user memory. Two unique features are that it will allow swappable covers and changeable home screens.
Both devices will have single CPUs clocked at 1.4 GHz. They will also have typical Windows Phone features, such as the People Hub for social media connections on Facebook, Twitter, and other sites, and the web accessible through Internet Explorer 9.
The Lumia 800 is already being packaged and prepared for shipment starting in November. Initially, it will be available from 31 carriers in six European countries: Italy, the U.K., France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain. The retail price will be 420 Euros (USD $584). The Lumia 710 will be available at a lower cost (270 Euros) but will not be available until later in the year. Its preliminary markets will be Hong Kong, India, Russia, and Taiwan.
These two phones mark the first products from a long-term deal Nokia made with Microsoft to make the Windows Phone operating system Nokia’s primary platform. Nokia previously had its own platform, Symbian, as well as the Linux-based MeeGo, which was a joint venture with Intel. The move to Windows came as a surprise to much of the tech world, including Intel, which has since abandoned the MeeGo project as well.

Nokia N9 MeeGo phone tips & tricks & FAQs

Summary: The Nokia N9 is a beautiful piece of hardware with a pleasant operating system. There are not many out there yet, but there are some cool functions and features to explore.

I posted my first impressions of the Nokia N9 a few days ago and have been using it extensively since that time. The more I use it the more I love it and I don’t know if I can resist picking one up after I send this evaluation unit back to Nokia in a week. Like the N900 before it, there are a ton of “hidden” features and functions in the N9 and I wanted to share some with you and also answer your questions from my earlier post.

Nokia N9 tips & tricks

I discovered some of these and others were sent to me via Twitter or comments:
  • Swipe to view notification: You have likely seen the Android and now iOS home screen notifications and like the new iOS 5 notifications (I believe they passed up Android) you can swipe the notification to the side to launch right into that notification from a locked screen.
  • Swipe to close: By default (there is a setting to change it) you can swipe from off the screen down and towards the center to close an application. I also recommend you get the free SwipeManager utility in the Ovi Store to give you control on swiping from all sides.
  • Leave the power button alone: I found it a bit of a hassle to tap the power button to unlock the screen, but then a follower mentioned all you have to do is double tap on the display to turn on the display. This is also in the settings with a toggle to turn off.
  • Quick Launch Bar: With behavior very similar to webOS, you can swipe up and hold your finger in place from the lock screen or from within an application to open the Quick Launch Bar that gives you four app icons to launch. If you get the free Shortcuts utility in the Ovi Store you can then customize what those four selected apps are if you don’t like the default ones.
  • Task manager zoom: One of the three primary screens in the task manager that shows thumbnails of open apps. You can pinch and zoom on this to show more or fewer application icons.
  • Swipe through inbox: Rather than going back out to the full inbox view, you can simply swipe left and right to move through your email inbox with ease.

How Nokia Lumia 800 saves money on 3G downloads compared to iOS and Android
By Alex Bentley on December 19,
 2011 at 00:00,
Save money on Nokia Lumia 800 Windows PhoneEvery day we’re finding more reasons why we love our Nokia Windows Phone and we’ve just found a new one, as the great Windows Phone 7.5 OS has managed to automatically help us to save money on our monthly phone bill. Join us as we show you what we’ve found on our Nokia Lumia 800.
When it comes to using our smartphones, we always try to be as careful as possible not to exceed our minutes, texts and data usage each month, but with so much to say and do with our Nokia phones, it’s not always the easiest thing to do. Well now our Nokia Lumia 800 has stepped in to help us out.
While they were sitting on the train home from yesterday, they thought we catch up on downloading the latest apps and songs we've been intending to try out on our Nokia Windows Phone. So they quickly activated 3G on our handset, got connected and got down to business at the Windows Phone Marketplace.
As usual it hadn't crossed our minds that downloading a lot content might push us over our every month limit (hey, were dull like that), so they were busily downloading when Windows Phone 7.5 decided to save us from ourselves and stepped in with a great small feature that they hadn't spotted until now.
Any time you try and download a immense file over 3G on your Nokia Windows Phone, the Windows Phone 7.5 OS automatically steps in and puts the largest files in a queue to be downloaded when your in range of a Wi-Fi connection, saving you money and letting you download the file faster.
Of work you might be more sensible about your downloads then they appear to manage, but for us this great feature on our Lumia 800 is our new best mate and they can't wait to see how much money we have saved on our every month bill (which we no doubt then somehow manage to go and spend on something else).
What other great features have you noticed on your Nokia Windows Phone? Why not let us know in the Comments below?
